  I asked about interchangeability because I have replaced a LM317T voltage regulator with a LT317AT voltage regulator in a CD player, and now the new voltage regulator [LT317AT] runs EXTREMELY HOT, when the former one [LM317T] ran merely hot.

    It is probably faster than the original part and requires better layout and bypassing.

  LM317T has 0c to 125c operating range.
  LM317AT has -40c to 125c operating range.
