My Sony XDR-F1HD (I'm assuming that's the Sony you have too) is safely in its original box, locked in a closet. That's so it doesn't try and hook itself up to my system in the middle of the night, on its own.
It has been a while, but I recall that the Sony has great RF performance, nearly on par with my McIntosh MR-78, but is likely my worst sounding FM tuner. There were mods which were supposed to improve the sound, but my mod list is far too long, so I never ended up breaking, umm, I mean 'modding' mine.
Below is a link to the HD Radio home page, where you can enter US zip codes and see what HD stations are available.
Follow Ups:
There is an HD station only about 30 miles away. I tried hooking it up with that cheesy T antenna but couldn't pull it in. To my surprise it did pull in a number of other stations. But no HD station.
I bought this Sony tuner on the wave of hype going around at the time. In all fairness it does pull in a lot. So it does have that going for it. Do I need a source for Mexican and Country music - ah no.
...putting your zip code into that link I posted? I'm asking, because I have NO idea if that site's information is current, or ten years old. You could try tuning in to some of the other stations they list in your area to see what happens.
I suppose it's a stretch, but there's always the possibility that the HD indicator on yours isn't functioning, and the best way I could think of to test that would be to try as many supposed HD stations as you can, and see what your results are.
I'm like you, I got caught up in the "This may be the most powerful RF tuner ever made" mania that was going around, and cheap enough for me to see for myself. If only it sounded better, I could have sold my MR-78, Dynaco FM-3, etc and lived happily ever after.
I did use that site and there was only one station in my area. And it didn't work. The last time I used this tuner it did pull in several HD stations.
I really enjoyed FM and was sad to see it go. All of my stations were either disappearing or getting interference from other radio sources. When my last station changed format - I called it quits.
Have you tried KBAQ? I don't listen to it HD, but it does transmit HD.
