The D 70 is a great amp, isn't it? With it driving the mids and highs and that big-ass 462 on the bass, the music really sings.
I ordered some EI ax7s years ago that had bright silver smooth plates. They sounded good, but of six I ordered, I think it was six, several did not last very long. Those that did were quite good. I had no qualms about putting them in a preamp I sold.

The amp is amazing. Besides the mids and highs it also brought the bass to a level in my Quads that I put any thought of a sub to rest. That's some system you have. Biamping with those amps quite the combination.
I only have one 12ax7 in my amp, branded Baldwin. Never tried a Yugoslovian there though have the 4 6dj8's I mentioned in another post in this thread.
The D70 was a favorite of Kent's of ElectroStatic Solutions. He ran EI KT90's in it instead of 6550's.
It's great to hear there's still some interest in that amp.

Thanks for the compliment re my system. A list of the components I went through would be an arm long. I think there is still some interest in the D70 since they don't seem to hang around long on the used market. Kind of like Quicksilver- if you want it better grab it cause someone else will.
At least the other day there was a pair of M 100s at a very reasonable price, I think on eBay. I thought about them since they are in the same family as the D70, but I thought it would be overkill.
Have you maybe tried both KT 88s and 6550s for your amp? If so, any comments? I've only heard with 6550s. If so, would appreciate your assessment.

Good point about the Quicksilvers. Never heard them but wouldn't hesitate to purchase without hearing if my amp ever gave up the ghost.Almost bought a quad of Genelex KT88's to try. Were on special at a dealer recently. But while browsing around other sites I came across and purchased a quad of the older Svetlana SV6550C at an even better price so grabbed them instead to keep as spares.
The Winged C St Petersburg with Square holes, either SED or older Svetlana, are really all that I've ever tried other than what appeared to be the stock tubes the amp came with when I purchased it 2nd hand a couple of decades ago.
I also picked up a pair of RCA 6550's in the Spring. Want to give one a try in that 5th position. I didn't realize how much of a difference that single tube made on the overall sound until I tossed a new 6550WE in there and it was not to my liking so went back to a winged C. Never know until you try I guess. Unfortunately I am way way behind on tweaking and best intentions still sitting in boxes.
I'll be sure to post any updates.
