Here is the factory shot in 2003 - look at very few cars on the road, and this is one of major streets.
This is not the whole factory, of course, just a corner building, the factory occupied several city blocks.

I finally decided to learn to read Cyrillic and a little Russian when I found myself food shopping at the Russian stores in Brooklyn. My mother lived down in Sheepshead Bay, which is almost entirely Russian or Ukrainian now. What surprised me was how many words have the same roots as the English and are easily understood. You don't get that from hearing it spoken. I was also surprised to find that the spellings are all straightforward, not like in English. It is still a hard language to learn.
...just reading it as it is written will get you by, but unfortunately the proper pronunciation can be very, very hard, as the sounds change in an unpredictable way, depending upon the word structure. It is a much harder language to learn than English or German - just look at its crazy case system. :)
