I have a MAC MC 275 version vi. I have replaced the stock KT 88s with SED 6550s or JJ KT 88s and the 12ax7s with os Teles but have, so far, left the stock AT7s in place. The newer tubes have improved the sound, both warmer and clearer, but does anyone have a suggestion as to new 12at7s to roll in, hopefully to give a more tubey sound. I know opinions differ as to the effect of different tubes on the sound of this series of amps and don't want to row about it, but any good suggestions would really be appreciated. Thanks.

I recommend Sylvania gold brand 12at7s myself in my equipment. You can still find decent prices but the gold brands depending on if they have gold pins vary a lot.
RCA and Sylvania made great 12AT7 type tubes.
A couple other great tubes were the Bendix 12AU7WA, Bendix 5814A and 12AT7WA. The Mullard ECC81 12AT7 has a juicy midrange, but not great at the extreme highs or lows. 12AU7 can sound veiled, so as transparent and organic sounding as one can get will equal the best REAL sound.

I'm running NOS Mullard 12AT7s on my MC-30s. Can't complain and haven't tried others. I've got several Bugle Boys, but haven't swapped them yet.

The original MC30 didn't use 12AT7s, only 12AX7, 12AU7 and 12BH7. In what position(s) are you using the T7s?
Oops, next time I'll check the small print with my reading glasses on. you are correct, I was looking at the 12AX7.

Call me ignorant. Two per channel but I don't really know their role in the circuits.

Here's some info:
Tube Compliment
3 - 12AX7A Input and Phase Inverter
4 - 12AT7 Voltage Amplifier and Driver
4 - KT88/6550 Power Output
-Rod
I'm seeing 1/2 a 12ax7 input gain stage (V1), a 12au7 phase inverter(V2), a 12bh7 driver (V3) and a 12az7 cathode follower (V4) per channel.

For new production tubes, I really like Psvane.
I have used the Psvane 12ax7s in the amp and really like them. Not quite as much as the teles, but they are awfully good. And the prices, well. I'll give them a try. Thanks.

Forget new, NOS RCA 12AT7 is as good as it gets.
I have two RCA 5751s that made my CJ PV 9a really jump like nothing else. I think you're right though about nos. Some of my "os" vintage tubes measured well, but crapped out pretty quickly. I'm thinking mainly about a pair of 12ax7 bugle boys years ago in the 9a that lasted all of about two weeks. I've mainly steered clear of old tubes that are not new since then. But NOS would be a different story provided they were reasonably affordable. But the Psvane's mentioned above are worth a listen given the good sound from the 12ax7s I've used recently. Much thanks for the suggestions.

Cannot sub a 5751 for a 12AT7.
I knew that but was really commenting on how good the RCA brand sounded when I've been able to use it. Thanks for the reply, but it's hard to get four NOS ones, but if I can find them I'll try to get them.

26 NOS RCA 12AT7 on eBay.
I'll look tomorrow. Generally don't look on eBay for tubes but sounds like it's worth it. Know of any reliable tube sellers on eBay.

i can offer 30 pieces telefunken <> 12AT7/ECC81...
Thanks for the info, but I just ordered five nos Sylvanias AT7s for a tryout. Will have to curtail spending for a bit. My portable dishwasher sprung a leak last night. Replacement cost best part of a grand. An unexpected pleasure. Wish I hadn't ordered the Sylvanias now, but they are on the way. I hope they are worth it.

Sylvania tubes are very good. You will like them. Next to RCA I like Sylvania.
Thanks for the encouragement. The dishwasher crapping out was bad, but even worse is doing dishes by hand till the new one arrives.

NOS because there is no current mfgr. More robust cathode than T7 but otherwise same characteristics. Mac used them as the cathode follower drivers in original MC275 / MC75.
