The E180F(T) and 5842 both have a Mu = 50. Very little amplification is generally necessary in a line stage. In fact the majority of users have way too much gain in their signal chain. There was a Chinese line stage on another forum that needed 10 tubes to attenuate the 2Vrms from the user's DAC to the 1.25Vrms needed to drive the amp to clipping!

If the 5842 load to, let's say 5k opt, the gain would be step down and end up the linestage around 15x of gain.
That does sound like an appropriate application for a tube like the E180F. I have a couple dozen of them bought years ago. I sorted them by plate voltage and current at a particular bias and found at least half of them were very close to the data sheet.
I also used the D3a, but then got into high Gm triodes. The EC86 is generally cheap Mu = 68 @ 14mA/V Gm. It is well worth a try.
