Hello. Seeking recommendations for 12bh7 which have a darkish tonal character. reissues/current production/easy to find NOS that's not expensive would be great. Are there any brands out there which are actually known to sound darkish in general?
Thank you.

As I'm only able to pass along what I've actually heard from said versions I've owned in the past.
For said type of signature, I can highly recommend in the following order, Brimar | RCA | Sylvania | Westinghouse ( of which very very few seemingly have never taken seriously ) look for only the NOS 50s makes with Black or Carbonized Black Plates and call it a day.
Here's a prime example here ( of which if it was me, I'd bid strong, at say $180 within 10 seconds of the bid actually ending,Manx never beforehand, as you'd then give others an opportunity to out bid you:

Thanks everyone for the effort and input. Really appreciate it.
I think the RCA would fit the bill. Look for ones from the 1960's personally feel the dimple getter sound the best. Other option would be Hytron from the early 1950's.
On new tubes check out the TADS 12bh7 rca type tubes. Linked below is to site that reviewed some of the 12bh7.
Message me if need any additional information.
In my experience, the GE 12bh7 had that characteristic, having used it in my Quicksilver monos awhile back. The GE was a bit thick, creamy and smooth. I found some Amperex 12bh7 that were just the opposite. Light, clean, clear sounding.
Amperex worked well in the Quicksilvers.
GE was a little too much of a good thing.
Never heard a dark sounding 12BH7. You will have to buy various brand tubes and test yourself. As for RCA, not dark sounding per my ears.
Might be me misunderstanding what dark sounding means. Was thinking rca more due to the warmer sound they offer. 12bh7 tubes tend to be reasonably priced so it might come down to trial and error.

My tube amp can uses either 12bh7 or the 6dj8 family of tubes. Tried a bunch of the 12bh7 before moving onto the 6dj8 types. Currently using the 7308 (part of the 6dj8 family) and love them.
Sorry to ramble off of original poster question my suggestion is research the 12bh7 and find a seller that will work with you and except returns.

I have never understood how people change tube types like that?
Those two tubes are so different one from the other. I just don't see how, if the circuit is optimized for one how it could possibly work with the other.
Do you have a schematic for your amp? I would love to see it.

When i bought my Quicksilver Mono 90's off the for sale site on here years ago, the seller forgot to send me the 12BH7's. He said i could use 12AU7's in place of/until i got 12BH7's. I'm using a pair of Sylvania 12BH7's in them now. I didn't notice much difference between the AU7's & the BH7's, but i think the BH7's sound a little better. As for darker sound i'm not sure it'll make much difference depending on application. I think mine are in a phase splitter mode!? Anyway, you should still be able to find some and i don't think they'll cost too much. I could be wrong though. Tom
