What compatible tube will lower the gain of an EAR 834p?
Follow Ups:
I am going to put a 5751 in the V1 position to see what it does. I am also going to change the silver mica caps to polystyrenes to cure its overly bright sound.
What kind does tubes does it take? maybe there's a lower gain variant.
12ax7.
The EAR 834P has a lot of gain. I used one for over 20 years. Great for MM carts, not so great for Lo MC.
Jack
My MM cartridge is very full and resolved thru out its frequency range causing this phonostage to sound too hot, but in a non-offensive way.
The guys on DIYAudio seem to think that using a different tube type will negatively alter the units equalization, even when placed in V1 (impedance mismatch).
I plan to put a trimpot at one of the inputs of a preamp that I am going to build.
