One of the Gold Lion KT-88s on my Citation II started to glow a bright orange. I shut the amp down before it red plated. I was still getting audio from the amp at the time and nothing smelled burned. This unit has been rebuilt using McShane kits by a professional tech.
Should I check the bias and reuse the tube or get a new tube? Is there anything else I should check?
Thanks
Follow Ups:
There's a resistor associated with that tube that's probably smoked also.
The resistor is the cathode resistor 15r @ 1W. If the resistor is burned or discolored it should be replaced with the same wattage e.g., one watt! The resistor serves as a fuse to save the output transformer if an output tube red plates.
The OP should absolutely check the bias on the tubes. If the bias was way off it could have been the cause of the fault; if not then one might suspect a bad tube or a leaky coupling cap. At that point unless the OP is technically proficient the unit should be looked at by a qualified technician.
