I'm looking for information about the sonics or character of different brands of 7788 tube. For example:
Amperex
Westinghouse
Phillips
I've used Amperex: very nice but they developed a hiss & need to be replaced. Currently using RCA & find them slightly too bright.
Thx in advance for any tips.
Jeff
Follow Ups:
First rule: brand on the bottle means little. 7788 was never a high volume tube; probably had few actual makers. Amperex likely imported Philips tubes, maybe from more than one division or factory. RCA and Westinghouse are likely Philips as well. All Philips divisions marked a factory and date code, usually near the bottom.

Tom, thx. it's odd b/c I saw a discussion of the 7788 and one guy was saying, the RCA is harsh and sterile sounding. I thought this was typical internet stuff: everyone has an opinion. But lo and behold the RCAs are -- certainly not that bad -- but a bit on the hard/bright side. Yet the Amperex tubes I used previously did not suffer from this. Apparently they were nonetheless both made by the same manufacturer. Well, I bought another pair of Amperex and we shall see.
Best,
Jeff
