I believe the point being made is that you aren't listening to what the different tubes can do...-your listening to what the "wrong" tube for the circuit sounds like. You don't care about that which is fine.
Follow Ups:
The rest of my system is revealing enough to show even minor differences in either power or driver tubes. In a tube SRPP preamp I built recently, "Elements", swapping a Gold Lion 12AX7 for a Lin Lai 12AU7 showed how much warmer the X7 was over the U7.
Admittedly two different brands had something to do with it. I stay with any change for a week or more before any other changes. I went back to the Gold Lions.

I don't doubt that you can hear a difference the different tubes and the sound is more pleasing with some versus others. I used to swap E80CC for 12AU7 in my old smart 845 mono blocks. I had teflon caps installed and was told how great the engineering was on the amp but not to use the E80CC because it was stressing the transformer. Sounded good though.
I'm on a number of forums and I'm shocked how many tubes dome guys have. I have four liftable boxes and thats too much. Over the COVID period I built as many amps as I could to use and move out as many tubes as I could. Still got a lot to go. Thus this latest EL34 amp the tubes of which I've had for decades.
I made a promise in the COVID period to never ever buy any more tubes. That was a waist of a promise.

As long as you enjoy the hobby, that's what is important.
