In Reply to: RE: Technical Question, How to calculate cathode bypass cap value if the cathode is elevated 90V (direct couple ) posted by Ian L on November 23, 2023 at 07:17:36
Hi Ian,
An off topic
How do you feel the sound of CCS. I find SS CCS has a bit edgy sound similar to those in SS amp
To minimize the distortion, I avoid loop feedback and employ cathode degeneration which only use simple resistors. One AA member Andy Evans also reported plate loaded resistor sound more natural
Just want to find out if other people would setup SS CCS without hat side effect

I think I can answer your question best by asking you another one.
Do you hear any difference between different kinds of resistors, or between different kinds of capacitors, or between different kinds of tubes, or between different kinds of feedback, or between different amplifier topologies?
If your answer to any one of these is yes, then you are probably able to resist thinking that all possible CCS circuits sound the same in every circuit they are a part of.
Ii think you are right on that because I can hear different sound from different cap, resistors
By using the IXYS plate CCS the dynamic was increased bur slight edgy sound.
In what kind of CCS implementation you feel it sound more smooth?
I think the difficulty in designing by sensitive ear is the fact that everything makes a difference. It's good to remember that not only does the part matter, but also the circuit. Everything is related to everything else ,So you have a situation where the possibilities are seemingly infinite. This is where I found it helpful to appreciate and try to adopt a bit of the engineer's way of looking at things - not that I come by it naturally - but I've had some good friends who were engineers and they sort of nudged me into shape.
The IXYS parts are good but so are those from other manufacturers. In most cases I don't think it's so much the quality of manufacture - there are standards that have to be met to stay in business - but the type of part, its electrical characteristics which , like it or not, you'll be better off if you learn something about them.
And I have to repeat, there are many different circuits that can be called CCS and there are many parts that can be used in most of them. If you're interested, the only thing to do is try this, try that , turn it around , do it with another part . . . . . . .
Make sure you keep notes on everything you do.
Below is a link to a thread called - Searching the "Best" CCS - that has lots of leads to follow.
Then, there may be improvements for every one of them. : )
There's no end of possible things to say. I'm stopping myself here.
