The 6146 was intended for use in environments that were particularly unfriendly to high voltage. That includes high humidity and even the salt-laden air found on board ships at sea. The bakelite octal base is otherwise more than capable of handling the HV applied to these tubes. Heathkit sold external power supplies for more than two decades that carried +700V and -100V through an 11-pin octal-type connector. These supplies powered 6146-based transmitters/transceivers, and I have never heard of a failure from this design.
Follow Ups:
I've seen quite a few octal sockets that arced between pin 3 and pin 2. (plate to heater).
I suspect it was caused by flyback voltage caused by an unloaded output transformer, though.
All octals are not created equal, let alone how variable the solder tab bending can be.
