I think Ian was saying you would need a higher load impedance to minimize the asymmetry between left and right ends of the load line.

I can't help it. Not knowing a lot, I defer to the curves. My understanding is that as you go higher in impedance, it gets increasingly difficult to make a (good) large (for higher power) output transformer that can handle full range. 10K Ohms seems to be at the upper edge of the generally accepted "can do it well" range. I think output transformers built for lower power have a bit more room, (Lundahl makes a good one at 16K but it's intended for the 801a and not very big.) and I believe parallel feed output transformers do too.
Being into flea power, my thinking usually is to not sacrifice cleanliness for power. If more power is needed then I'd try to find a tube that gives that in its most linear range. So for those 845 curves and a 10K load , I would reflexively (like knee jerk) move the operating point to the left. -
80mA at 850V looks better to me. It would be even more linear at a higher current (85mA is still a bit below max diss.) but I'm inclined to leaving a larger margin unless there's a big stash of cheap tubes. Hard to do with a tube like the 845.
Again, I don't know much so I'm forced to think this way, with simpler circuits that don't make use of distortion cancellation finesse.
Hi Ian,
The selection of 70mA 1170V idle would let the OPT has more room for the AC Flux(AC power), say if one intend to set 1.3 Telsa for both AC and DC, lower standing DC will allow the gapped OPT still have more room for AC
The famous Tango X10s being 7.8kg allows 40 watts at 30Hz, it is 10K primary 70mA DC optimal
"...my thinking usually is to not sacrifice cleanliness for power."
I agree.
