I'm surprised to find normal bias tapes can produce so great sound.
Follow Ups:
Not saying AR (and related AR-X, DS-X, and AD) tapes aren't any good-because they are.
But I definitely prefer the Maxell variety. In *MY* opinion, they seem to be able to capture the deep lows just a wee bit better than their TDK counterparts.
Plus, as noted, the TDK's are exceedingly difficult to procure these days. So if I were you, and had the means, I would get my hands on as many XLI and XLI-S tapes as possible, just as I did.
Now THESE are some sweet tapes.

Yep Mathew, hopefully come next year I'll have to take a few of those tapes off your hands. :)
That is true. The AR-X is considered one of the best TYPE-I tapes in the market. But they are all hard to find nowaday though. Happy Listening !!!
Mike
I have one of these tapes (AR-X). But I haven't used it yet to know how good it is. I do find however the last edition of the XL-IS tape sounds good, especially since it adds low end to the recording and has clear treble as well. The older XL-IS tapes also did this, but less so. I did however find the last edition of the XL-IS hard to bias properly, especially since X-2000R (Mathew) said it was in essence a chrome particle tape mixed with ferric.
