Which do you prefer on a cassette deck,Manual Bias fine control or decks with Auto Biasing facilities?
Follow Ups:
can give the best result but are more time consuming and fuzzy.
"dolph"
I think the choice of "auto" biasing would depend on how it's designed and implemented in any particular deck.
Some do auto biasing better than others. Nakamichi has, in my opinion, the best system because they take into account the azimuth of the heads, and it being right for that tape, when the adjustment is made.
I can see preffering manual adjustment if your more the hands-on, knob-tweeking type that like to make just the right adjustments, etc...
One might even take greater satisfaction in a recording well made because of knowing that it was your manual efforts and not a automated system that made it happen.
Different ears prefer different sounds too. The autosystem may do what the manufacturer thinks is best, but sometimes you may want an over- or underbiased sound.
On my Teac, if I follow the instruction manual & use a test oscillator, it doesn't get me the best sound. I can get a 'nicer' recording by listening to carefully chosen music & doing it by ear.
