It's a Japanese dollar store called "Daiso". They have them here in the San Jose area. They carry Sony and TDK 90 minute ones for $1.50/each. All the writing is in Japanese, but they are there and they work great! I just tried one last night.
Hopefully this will help someone.

Sony and TDK, excellent! Can you remember what models they are - SA or UX etc.? I believe they have a store or two in Seattle too, if that helps anyone.
BTW, the tape is made in Japan and assembled in Thailand. All labelling is printed in Japan--at least on the Sony.

The Sony is CDixII high bias. The TDK says high position type II: DS2-90S. Most of the writing is unfortunately in Japanese. I can't read it for the life of me. That's the only english on them. They look totally different from any that I've seen.

I just wanted to update this a bit in case there were others in this area looking for good new tapes. I have made multiple recording using these tapes and haven't had a problem. The Sony seem to sound better in my Sony deck than the TDK do. In my Denon deck it is 6 to one, 1/2 dozen the other as I can adjust the bias on it.
Hope this helps someone,

Daniel - does this store still have them? Any chance of posting a pic? I'm fascinated!!
All the best - Marc
The store still has them and will carry them indefinitely. I'm not sure how to post a pic on AA. Perhaps I should look into it. Anyway, they are nice tapes and readily available to anyone who lives near a Daiso and for only $1.50 each.
