Hiss becomes LESS of a problem at higher speeds, because you can operate the machine at a relatively higher level.
I believe on a good quality machine you don't need noise reduction at high speeds. Companies like Fostex and Tascam made some budget machines that put 16 tracks on 1/2 inch tape, or 8 tracks on 1/4, even 8 tracks on 1/8 inch! Then you do need noise reduction.
DBX (which Teac pushed quite hard) - being single banded - does not affect high frequencies, BUT on certain program types you can hear it 'breathing'.
Follow Ups:
You need to reacquaint yourself with the generations of dbx that came AFTER the one band units. They are nothing short of fantastic and are everything Dolby never was. You won't hear any 'pumping' on the three band dbx 3BX units and they evolved further even after that. Pricey yes for the newer ones, but worth it for the flexibility of a stand alone unit and what they are capable of doing.

Ahh... such things never appeared here in South Africa where the demand is small. Even DBX type 1 & type 2 processors were difficult to come by.
You get what you can get I guess....the later generation dbx units are trick as hell. Budget wise, I had to settle for a 3BX Expander and a SNR-1 for tape hiss. Wonderful units in every way.....
