I Like this page. It's a hall of fame of japanese hi-fi. Look at the end, there are entries for 5 pages of decks.

I sold my JVC TD-V711, beliving it was overperformed by the TD-V931, and hoping to get one 931 some day (hard difficult, I've seen none on eBay germany so far). I've read great opinions about how good is the 711. Now I don't know Which one is superior. I will probably regret from selling it. The JVC TD-V1010 and V-1050 must be good performers.
The other ones cited (DD-V9 and DD-99) are unkown for me, but also quite old.
From AIWA I have the XK-S9000 which is a great deck (I'll post my impressions against the CR-7 and ZX-7 someday). Toghether with the XK-009, are the best of all of this three brands. Probably the other good aiwas (F-90, AD-6900) are also superior to the other brands at their time.
From ONKYO: I've never read great opinions, nor have I seen any of their models being paid much on eBay. The better model is their lattest TA-6711 with dolby S, usually going over 100 euros on eBay germany. I had the TA-2570 and was a beautiful, feature-loaded deck. Its sound quality was average. Their TA-2060/2070/2090 are, sometimes, well priced on eBay too.
Follow Ups:
For JVC, the DD-99 and DD-V9 sure they are old but they are the two last great decks that JVC built.
The decks inside that Japanese Website are mostly for Japanese domestic market and carry the model name and number respectedlty. So you might not be able to find the exact one that you see here in the U.S. Good Luck.
Best Regards,
Mike
Well.
From the top ones I've only remember the TEAC Z-7000 (not Z-6000) being only for Japan. There are some others but with no comparable value.
Many other are the same with different model number. NAK ZX-5 = BX-300
pioneer t1100 = pioner ct-95
etc.
Other decks not listed from sony are exclusive from japan TC-KA7ES KA5ES...
For aiwa : the ad6900 machine!
