Poll,If you had to choose one of these tapes to use exclusively which would you use,Maxell XLII-S or TDK SA-X?
Follow Ups:
Hmmmm....in the past I always opted for Maxell MX-S as my personal favorite. I have a few left, but I'm not paying fleabay's hyped prices. So recently, I bought a small lot of Maxell 60 metal tapes. I haven't had a chance to try them because my metal deck is lost on a shelf at a tech's somewhere in the bowels of the Midwest. Soooo...I'm down to my CT-F900. For that I bought TDK Pro SM 60's. They seem like a fine tape for that machine so far.
Back to your question....given your choices-probably the TDK SA-X...as was said for 'brightness'. Given the mechanical failure of my TDK's in the past, I'd be quick to transfer the music to R2R or CD though.;-) Doesn't really mater what is said here, because so many speak in opposing tongue.;-)
If you read test reports over the years, you see that these two companies competed vigorously, and sometimes TDK was superior and sometimes Maxell. SO as far as sound quality goes, it depends on the year of manufacture, although they were always so close that it is probably hard to hear any difference. TDK tended most of the time to be a little brighter, so matching to the deck becomes a decisive factor. If you have a bias fine adjustment, of course, you can adjust for either. In my experience with thousands of cassettes over a 30 year period, Maxell has been consistently more reliable. I have had very few mechanical problems with Maxell, but several TDK's have gone bad. Quite a few TDK SA's and SAX's have developed flutter problems. Incidentally, for a while I bought quite a few BASF cassettes and virtually all of them have become useless. On some of them, the ferric particles literally flaked off the tape.
I have tried alot of different and exellent cassettes but i always go back to TDK.I always feel as though i am missing something with XLII-S as compared to SA-X.I seem to hear sounds that i have a hard time detecting with Maxell, seems as though the TDK captures more information.Of course this is just my opinnion and YMMV...Peace.
But the Maxell is very close, and I have plenty of those too. I've just always had excellent luck with TDK.
Cheers,
Bobbo :-)
