Hello
after getting on a nostalgia kick (Vinyl) recently... I've decided to give friction technology a place in my home once again after some 25 years of absents. Can somebody please offer suggestions as to the better units to look for e.g. Teac,Revox, Tandberg, etc. As I have not kept up on the various models, and performance levels of the top achievers. So my hopes are to find something in the under $1500.00 range (less is better) if possible for a top of class performance job.
thanks in advance
T.H.

If you're the type of person that doesn't mind getting your fingernails dirty, are constantly modding perfectly good gear, and likes to do things off the beaten path, then reel to reel may be great for you. I know it is for me. I have several r2r's but only my Technics is what I would consider top notch. I got a pretty nice one a about 2 years ago for $750 and haven't had to do much to get it running to factory spec.. The prices have gone up on them overall, but as far as I've noticed, the ones that are in great condition have always commanded close to $1k . It looks like the middle-poor condition machines are what's really gone up in price. I think that the price range you've stated is about right to get one that's really good. It does take patience to find the right machine. No matter which deck you get, try and find a good local service guy that has experience with the deck you buy. The machines require regular service to sound their best and servicing after you buy a used one should be added to the mix. I like working and fiddling around in my deck myself but I know my limits. I looked at a few Otaris too, but a lot of them were used and abused in radio stations/studios ( in a studio a 1/4" Otari would most likely be a beater deck).
You can still get a new Otari 5050mkIII fresh from the factory. Or even a Nagra
How about spending a little time and looking at previous posts.
This question has only been asked about a dozen times.
Toobhead, please searh forum below for Top R2R decks. I mentioned that servicebility and parts availability is of utmost importance.
For example, what good is awesome Tandberg or Technics if it fails and no spares are available, and second deck you buy to cannibalize has same ailment.
Someone mentioned that there are still enough of spares for pro AMPEX decks.
I would investigate that route or Tascams.
hello Bob
good point indeed! in as much as a vintage automobile looks better going down the road, than in the garage...
cheers
