I just picked up a Marantz pmd500 cheap.
Problem is, I can generally only get it to record by setting it to "timer record" and powering it up.
Pressing record just causes the record indicator to flash.
What am I doing wrong? Please forgive my ignorance.
Thanks

Hi, Z:
Here's a totally dumb question but what the heck!
Are you simultaneously pressing the REC and PLAY button to engage the machine in the RECORD mode? If not, you should, of course!
Also: Have the "write protect" tabs on your cassette been removed, somehow?
Over and out!

I was able to find out the correct procedure.
Pressing "Record" puts the tape into pause mode. You then press pause to "unpause" the drive and start the motors.
Its very non-intuitive and totally unlike consumer decks but I guess it gets the recording going with a minimum of delay.
Thanks Marantzguy.
My tandberg 3034 doesn't respond to the 'record' buton.
If you want to record, first you go to pause mode using 'pause' button,
then the record light flashes, and then you can press the 'record' button to record, and the record light gets lighted.
You can do the sequence 'play', then 'pause', then 'rec'
Imagine you buy a deck like this and try to fight with it to record
pressing 'record', 'record' + ' play ' and see than nothing happens.
Peace.

It's how nearly every consumer deck i've owned works and how the Teac V 6030-S i use now works, i suppose it what you're used to. Seems very intuutive to me.
