...when buying a machine like that the refurbishing cost might dominate, not the shipping.
I have bought heavy machines from as far as Australia, and recently a 200lb beast shipped to me from Switzerland - and in all cases the shipping was not crazy.
Refurbishing can quickly exceed this, as a good technician is going to charge $150 an hour, and any serious job will take at least several days. I think Myriad charges $10-12K to refurb your machine, and that is base price, without doing any upgrades.
But you don't need to buy an Ampex to get good sound - that is the good news.

I guess my Revox PR99 MKII will do for now.
...you switch to Monitor outputs... better quality that way.
How do you get that?... I don't have the DIN plug.

Just type "DIN to RCA cable" into ebay or Amazon window. :)Or "DIN to XLR Cable" is that is more convenient.

The monitor DIN output was just for speakers only. Ordered them, Thanks for the tip.

Before it makes it way to the output board with all that stuff required to drive the balanced connections. Let us know how it goes for you, but there seems to be the universal preference among those who tried it.
Here is the picture of one of mine.
I always wanted to own one after I heard it from one of our local CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corp.) radio stations. I can only dream...I suppose.
Will let you know the Revox PR99 MKII performance results once I get it all set up and listen to it.
