It's Oliver Nelson's "The Blues and the Abstract Truth," a jazz classic from 1961. Featuring such stalwarts as Freddie Hubbard, Eric Dolphy, and Bill Evans. Many (most?) of you would call the price way too high and dismiss the whole idea. The rest of you might be interested in what I found.
For starters, the packaging is almost as exquisite as the music and the sound quality. The package includes two tapes, weighs a ton, and occupies a LOT of shelf space. Once you've found your way inside it, you (or rather, I) think, "I see why Chad Kassem charges $450 for these things." That's with free shipping but plus tax.
But oh, the music/sound quality. I have a lot of 15 ips 2-track tapes and this is every bit the equal of the very best of them, while looking way better than any of the others. But do looks really matter? I didn't think so but ... yeah. Sue me.
Now, my wife is NOT an audiophile, thinks I play stuff two loud for her liking.Hurts her ears. She was hosting two friends when I got the box. These two do like music but a reel-to-reel tape was totally alien to their world view. After playing "Hoedown" from the album, at a serious volume level, Terry (wife) said "That is the most spectacular thing I ever heard from your system and you can quote me," The other two echoed her.
This was a me-to-me early birthday present. I may or may not buy more of them. But I can safely say that anyone who does will not be disappointed.
Anyone who wants to know my tape playback system will find it on Inmate Systems under Dave Pogue.
Follow Ups:
5 Tapes will cost $2250.
How much is the R to R player?
A very pricy pastime!
You can get wonderful tapes from International Phonograph Inc for $150 a piece - he has a lot of great jazz there.

Not I.
...pieces of music that I have ever heard. Fortunately, for those of us less well heeled, AP is coming out with a fresh LP pressing of it shortly. I can't wait! Enjoy your fantastic tape. Would love to hear it.
Checked out your location. Not exactly a hop-skip-and-jump from me in MD. Too bad. Given the price, as you can imagine, this particular tape buy took LOTS of thought. I already have a pristine LP, so I know the album. It's the 2nd most popular of the Acoustic Sounds series, in terms of actual sales (No. 1 is an Oscar Peterson performance I also have on vinyl). Still, $450 plus tax.
I now feel it was a bargain :-)
Congratulations, I am glad you are enjoying it! I believe I have that album recorded off hi res streaming at 15ips. It would be interesting to compare your tape with mine. :)
My wife can take some jazz, mostly classical, the post 1950 stuff irritates her sensitive ears. Fortunately, my room is in the basement, so listening volume is not such a hot issue. :)
I am going to look at your system, I am really curious. At this moment I am finishing calibrating my Ampex ATR-102, and I am expecting a nice shipment of 1/2" 30ips master tapes on Monday, so I am going to share your excitement!

Two things, original Karajan cassette tapes of Wagner's Ring and paper label original Solti Ring new and sealed, in Ampex cases. As close to the original master tapes as you can get, which most likely aren't available anyway. Total freak out since I have a great many Wagner CDs, which are good, too, don't get me wrong. But...Ps I also scored new and sealed the famous 1950 Furtwangler Tristan und Isolde on cassette. Also incredible, you know, the one with Flagstad.
Tape is a natural medium. It breathes.
