Just explain your premise and stop being so grumpy!Your opening statement was so open to interpretation as to be largely meaningless.
Cheer up Geoff!

Why do portable cassette players sound better while walking outside than they do indoors? You would think that they'd sound the same, right? You know, since room boundaries and room dimensions don't affect the sound indoors, so you can't blame it on room interaction. So, what has changed? Why is the sound more natural, more open, more airy when listening outside? Any guesses?

If you mean a 'boombox', reflections are an issue. Which you discount. So if you mean a cassette Walkman with headphones, then clearly the room is irrelevant, whether you are indoors or not. So what's the source of said impact which you believe causes a change in presentation?
In addition, the source format would also seem to be irrelevant in any physical circumstance (headphones or not), unless your implying that something special happens to cassette tape and it somehow knows whether you're indoors or not?
Can you identify an environmental impact that has an effect on a cassette in a walkman but curiously not on any of the other electronic items in the playback machine?
Let us know.

You are asking me? It's a Sony Walkman cassette player. But I don't think the tape or tape player is responsible for what I observe, it should happen for a portable CD player, too. That will be my next step since I have a Walkman CD player. Stand by. My theory is that the effect must be caused by something environmental, not the electronics or the tape/CD. Follow?

Yes - maybe - but I think I'll just focus on the music.
Cheers and good luck.
