Most cassette decks, even entry level units would clobber this unit in performance. Frequency response is barely ok, SNR and wow flutter are dreadful. Unless you really wznt mono, stay away.
Monaural.
Looks like the same 'transport' as a TC-250/TC-350.Is that a TC-105?
all the best,

hifiengine's got 'em (OM and SM)! :)
See link below.

It's monaural so obviously, I'm not interested, and besides, it's probably doesn't work anymore.

Well recorded mono can be surprisingly good. I have some 15ips tapes, recorded back in the fifties, and I could swear they have depth and width to their sound.
It is amazing... so amazing in fact, that I have been asking myself whether they were truly mono. I finally resolved this by looking at their output with an oscilloscope in the XY more. There you see just one line at 45 degrees, just as the mono would have.
I am also playing a lot of tapes on mono machines in my office. While recorded in stereo, they sound very, very good played on things like mono Nagra.
I've been enjoying listening to mono vinyl recordings lately by Chet Atkins, Nat King Cole, Loui Armstrong, Chet Baker, just to name a few. Like you said a well-recorded mono does sound with a lot of presence depth and width to the point that you couldn't tell whether you're listening to mono or something else.
However, the unit that I've posted above is way out of my league as it'll probably need an extreme overhaul on its mechanism before it'll operate properly besides, I'm looking for the stereo models of these.

It is quarter-track mono* (which is kind of odd, and obviously won't offer the audio performance of half-track mono) but the specs aren't bad at all.It probably needs CLA, as they say ("cleaning, lubrication, and adjustment").

* i.e., if it is a TC-105.

It just that I'm looking for the stereo ones.
