I store my tapes on racks in a carpeted room. When I vacuum near the tapes - say 6 inches distance - could I be damaging the recordings?
There must be something wrong with me for not having something wrong.

Six inches from the beater bar brush, or six inches from the motor? And, it will of course depend on the particular vacuum cleaner motor's magnetic field. In the interest of caution, I wouldn't bring the motor that close to my tapes.
A second consideration of electrical fields, which you haven't raised as an issue in your case - although maybe you don't know - is storing tapes in proximity to electrical wiring, typically within a nearby wall. My general rule of thumb, for longterm storage, is to keep tapes at least three feet from any active AC wiring.
thank you. Upright vacuum, so the motor and the brushes vertically speaking are similar distance.
I will consider what I can do to improve storage situation.

Should not be -
While B fields (Magnetic fields) are generated by electrical cords and motors -
at household voltages there is not a sufficient field to alter the tapes-

that's a relief to know, thank you!
