It was not enough for them to throw us off by making XLR pin 3 hot, they also made the power plug pin negative!
Fortunately, I saw the guy mentioned this fact in his video, so I was already prepared!
Now, it all depends on how smart they were. Sometimes people put in the reverse polarity protection, so let's hope it is there, and your unit comes back to life, so you and I could share stories!
Regarding the batteries in TC-770 - I already bought some C cells. They actually have two separate sections in there: one with 6 cells, and one with 8. One supplies the power to the drive, the other - to electronics.

I have an Accuphase preamplifier that has been playing out of phase for years due to my laziness, but it still sounds great; doesn't blow up either!

That TC-770 is in great nick! It's a bit of a misnomer for Sony have called to call them 'portable', though we're probably spoilt these days. Ave Atque Vale, Leonard Cohen...

  It was not a truly portable portable, more of a on location recording machine. So they created the TC-510 as a somewhat more portable model.
  But don't underestimate the Germans - their Uher 4400 Monitor is the pinnacle of portability... before the cassettes came along. Amazingly, it manages to fit in two 5" reels under that cover.
