I have found a Nakamichi BX100 for sale for $50. The owner says it has a total of less than 75 hours of use on it and is in mint condition, but it has not been used in 35 years and the motor is sluggish and needs lubrication. How much of a project would it be to get the deck loosened up and running smoothly?
Follow Ups:
I believe that Sanyo made this line of decks for Nakamichi.
Look for better if you really want to play with cassettes.
If you're in northern New England, I have a working BX-125 (silver; very similar but newer) in its original carton that you can have if you really want one and if you can schlepp over & get it. Not really worth shipping at 2019 rates. :(
Thought I had a photo of it, but I don't have one handy -- here's a silver BX-100 for comparison. I know that I gave this one away at some point (in working condition).
all the best,

I thought it was Sankyo rather than Sanyo and that they made only the transport mechanism, not the whole deck. Could be wrong though.
*What's Up Doc?
Sorry. my Nak knowledge, such as it is, is limited to the only Nak I've ever owned, the BX-300.. But there's a Yahoo site --"Nak Talk" -- whose members could probably come up with what you need to know.
It wasn't even a typo, I just wasn't thinking and I didn't double-check!
Sorry!
all the best,
mrh

"... only a very few individuals understand as yet that personal salvation is a contradiction in terms."
You are right.
Plan on paying a LOT more than another 50 bucks before that Nak can begin to meet its specs today.
I'd much rather pay twice as much (at least) for a beat-up Nak that's been in near-daily or weekly use, as long as its head or heads aren't shot.
Having been involved in such projects recently - it all depends on who is doing work. If you can do it yourself, then you may indeed be able to do it for under $50 in replacement parts, if you shop smartly.
But there is usually fair amount of labor involved, so a hired technician will most likely bill you much more than that.
Somethin approaching PTSD from little springs and c-rings shooting out into the aether.
:(
OK, not really PTSD, of course, but still I hate workin' on 'em.
all the best,
mrh
Thanks, you have helped me overcome the temptation.
Inexpensive decks like that make sense only for someone who loves to tinker.
