Hello- I have a Teac 40-4 with the DX 4 unit. I want to add a external mixer for earphones and a mic. Can anyone help me with the proper hookup. I have all of the patch cords and main cable presently attached.I would like to thank anyone in advance.
Follow Ups:
{All Channels}Record:
[Mixer / Preamp / Line Level Source] > > [DX-4 Input {Encode)] > > [40-4 Line In]Playback:
[40-4] > > [Dx-4 Input (Decode) ] > > [ Mixer / Preamp / Line Level Select]
All can be connected simultaneously. To DBX encode a line level source, select *encode* on the DX-4 and record on the 40-4
To DBX decode an encoded tape on the 40-4, select *decode* on the Dx-4
To record without encoding DBX, as above but do not select encode on the Dx-4. It will pass through un-encoded line level to the 40-4 as if the Dx-4 did not exist.
To play back a non-DBX encoded tape, do not select decode on the Ds-4, it will pass through un-decoded tape channels as if the Dx-4 did not exist.
The Dx-4 has 8 pairs of RCA jacks.
On the left (as viewed from behind) you have:
On top left 4 RCAs *Input* *1-2-3-4* Connect a cable to your mixer output, line level out [record] on a preamp, etc.
On bottom left 4 RCAs *Output* *1-2-3-4* Connect a cable to your mixer input, line level input [playback] on a preamp, etcOn top right (as viewed from behind) you have:
On top right 4 RCAs *Encode Out* *1-2-3-4* Connect a cable to the 40-4 Record In
On bottom right 4 RCAs *Decode In* Connect a cable to the 40-4 Playback OutSelect each channel individually on the Dx-4
In - Bypass - does not encode or decode DBX
Out - Active _ Engages DBX encoding and / or decoding"Connect a cable" = connect one RCA-RCA cable for each of the 4 channels
To record via a microphone you need to hook up the mic to a mic preamp or mixer with mic inputs and then send to the Dx-4 as line level.

Hi Ralph-I am using 4 cables/ in/out in the mixer line for my hookup so far in #1 and # 3 on the mixer. Is this correct? Everything works on the recorder.
You have to mix from 4 channels down to 2. Do you get all 4 channels?
I also think that if your tapes are not encoded, its best to leave the DX-4 aside.
I have a Tascam 44 with the DX-4 module. I used to have a dbx 155 for my Revox.
My recommendation is to disconnect/bypass the DX-4 dbx module. Just let it sit there out of the chain. Trust me on this. Often, the sound can be very dramatic and full of dynamics and zero noise. Other times, not so much - it depends on the characteristics of the signal.
On the other hand, if you've already got dbx-encoded tapes, you're kinda screwed, and my recommendation is to either copy them to digital or copy them to a non-dbx'd tape.
Someday you'll thank me.
:)
Hi- I also have a mixer that I want to use on the Teac 40-Where is the best place to hook this up? I already mentioned that I have 4 inputs and 4 outputs on the recorder. Thank you
Hi-I am already thanking you for giving me some info. You are correct on this, I was trying to be a purist I guess. I will not use the DX 4 that much if at all.. I have 4 inputs and 4 outputs on the Teach recorder, to run all four channels will I need to use a Y cable since I have only 2 outs and two ins presently. Can you give me a rough sketch or something that I can use for the wiring hookup. The manual is very vague. thank you again for this information, you have changed my mind!
Hi Ralph- I really appreciate all of your help on this. You are correct on the hook up but what is disconnected on the 16 connections to hook up to the mixer. I will not be using the DX -4 all of the time but I understand about the bypass. I know what connections that are used on the mixer but not sure about all of the connections on the recorder.
4 for input
4 for output
The input connections to the recorder will be coming from the processor outputs of the DX-4.
The output connections of the recorder go to the inputs on the processor marked as coming from the tape machine.
The tricky bit is how the inputs and outputs are actually marked, but if you get it wrong it simply won't play off of the line outs to the mixer. So if that happens you'll know to switch them around.
Hi Ralph-I understand and that is the way the machine is hooked up but what is added or subtracted from the present wiring to go to the zephyr mixer. Why are there patch cords and one large cable being attached to the dx 4? What is disconnected and what is added on the current wiring. I feel real stupid about this. It would be great if there was just a set of plugs that I could use going to the mixer!
Hi Ralph-Yes I do. It is a Zephyr ZMX 122.
I looked up your mixer and I see why you would have difficulties. This mixer is not well suited to use as a mixing desk for multi-track tape, it appears to be better suited to front-of-house or 2-channel stereo mixing. The problem is not the DX-4 unit.
What you can do: Take the outputs from either the 40-4 direct or from the DX-4 unit and plug them into the line inputs of the mixer for channels 1-4 using 1/4" TS (tip/sleeve) plugs. You may already have these on your patch cable or you may need RCA to TS adapters. Be sure the Tip of the 1/4" plug is wired the the pin on the RCA and the Ring to the ground of the RCA. This should allow you to independently mix each of the 4 tape channels via the pan controls to the left/right main mix and headphone outputs of the mixer.
For recording, you can use the left/right main mix outputs and route them to any 2 channels of the 40-4 (pick any two). Cabling would be similar to the inputs using 1/4" TS (tip/sleeve) plugs in the main mix outputs of the mixer going into RCA plugs to any two channel inputs of either the 40-4 or DX-4 unit.
Unfortunately, you will not be able to use this mixer to simultaneously send recording signal to the tape and monitor the tape output as the same time. This would require a more sophisticated mixer.

Hi-I want to thank you for taking the time to respond. It is right on information. It has really helped me to hook up the mixer. It would have been easier to have run into a Teac A3440 possibly. Calco1
The outputs of the tape machine go into the Auxiliary or line level inputs. You then mix the four channels into two.
You'll need 4 cables to do this.
The Teach 40-4 is using all of the inputs and outputs with the patch cords from the dx-4. There are no more input and output connections.
The outputs are taken from the DX-4 in that case.
You will see on the back of the DX-4 that there are 16 connections, not 8 as you might expect.
4 are for input
4 go to the tape machine
4 receive the signal from the tape machine
4 are the outputs to the mixer.
If the tape is not encoded, the DX-4 is not used. It should have a bypass on it for this purpose.
About a year ago I sold a Teac DX-4 with cables and service manual - if you go to https://www.ebay.com/itm/232561187607 and to the right of the bold title there is a link marked "See original listing" and the photos of the one I sold are still available so you can select and zoom in to see the details of the front and back of the DX-4.
The service manual makes reference of a MA-4 "Mic Amp Unit"; I believe it would fit in the same spot as the DX-4 but I can't remember the details of what sort of inputs it had.
Just adding my $0.02 to this thread.
