Thanks for your opinion.
There's no smell now (and I wonder where it came from recently), and the motor is hot, but not VERY hot.
Yesterday I was visited by a friend who is not a tech but who has about 10 cassette recorders (none of which works!) and has a vast tape recording experience.
He thoroughly cleaned the heads and pinch rollers with Isopropyl and a cotton stick - and the pinch rollers were dirty! How could it happen if the seller claimed that he had serviced the deck just before sale?
My friend said that the dirty pinch rollers might have caused the problem - they damaged the tape during recording. I made a test recording just now and everything seems OK, but at the same time, I am looking for a good tech who knows Revox decks and who could service it.
Follow Ups:
The caps of this unit do dry up after many years of service so it's best to send it now that it's still working.
It's too bad that you're not in the U.S. as you can send it to JM Technical Arts http://www.jmtecharts.com/ However, they do have excellent Revox techs in Switzerland and or Germany.
If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing well

Yes, it's too bad I am not in the U.S. - I would definitely send it to JM Technical Arts...
I hope there should be good techs locally who know Studer and Revox equipment...
