I know exactly what you're talking about - had a Roberts/Akai a long time ago which used that method for speed change. I suggest you post this at tapeheads.net.

Parts donor unit is the easiest way. Akai is defunct. And hardly ever stocked parts in the USA when they were in business.
You are probably right, but I am not sure it is really a keeper anyway. It is a decent deck and works great at 3.75 ips, so I could probably sell it locally and get something else if I can't find a speed sleeve.
I have two TEAC A-2340SX decks anyway, along with a same-model donor deck that has saved my butt a few times. The Akai was a bit of an impulse buy, and I could still use it as a 3.75 ips deck if I decide to keep it.
