Hi All,
So I received a couple of the Analogy Records releases; 1/4 track config recorded on one side/tail-out, 7.5ips, NAB, 7". Played back on my Teac A-4300SX and these are my findings:
Essentaly ALL of the consumer 4-Track tapes mass-produced in the 60's/70's SUCK! These tapes from Analogy are mind-blowing and made me realize just how good this format can be if done right!
If you are thinking about picking up some of these titles, I can tell you that, if your machine is in tip-top shape, you will be very, very pleased! I just had mine adjusted not to long ago so I was ready! I can never listen to those crappy mass-produced tapes again!
Follow Ups:
Can I ask what titles did you get and how long did it take to receive them in the US? That Peter Erskine Trio looks interesting.

I ended up ordering and receiving:
- Elias Nardi Group, FLOWERS OF FRAGILITY (7.5ips, NAB, 7", 1/4 track)
- Andrea Celeste, SOMETHING AMAZING (7.5ips, NAB, 7", 1/4 track)
Once you place your order, it goes into a queue for production. After the tapes are created, they are shipped. From Genova, IT to me in Sacramento, California it was about 4 days roughly. Very, very fast service to say the least. note that most of the wait is for the production of the media, not the carrier time.
Truly worth the cost. I can't believe how GREAT these tapes sound. I realize they are expensive but if you want to see what Reel to Reel can do, you should treat yourself to at least one. I am surprised at how good the 1/4 track configuration sounds...I really want a 2 Track machine that can do 15ips for sure, now!
It's great to hear how pleased you guys are with these tapes.
When I get a few extra bucks, I'll be sure and check out a few.
Anyone heard the Peter Erskin tapes? I a fan of his. Heard him play in a number of different situations (big band-trio). Always awesome!
Hey Ironbut, if you like Peter Erskine, you might also want to check out Stockton Helbing (www.stocktonhelbing.com). He was Maynard Ferguson's drummer and music director, and over the past several years has done multiple tours with Doc Severinsen's big band, as well as his own quintet. He's pretty well-known in jazz circles.
:)
Here's a recording I made a couple of years ago.
Very clean, nice-sounding! Thanks for sharing.
ORTF stereo pair or similar?
:)
Spaced omni's to a minidisc. Just a 9V battery box to power the mics and the built in mic pre.
Audience recording in a small venue.
Don't agree. There are many fine-sounding commercial tapes. Yes, there are many MORE that don't sound close to "fine." There are even a few slow-speed (3 3/4 ips) commercial tapes that I've dubbed to 7 1/2 or 15 ips (4-track to 2-track) that would amaze you.
(Dubbing setup is a Teac 4-track machine direct to an Oltari MX5050)
