The little "Reserved for..." thingy was what we now call "corporate partnering" - a promo for BeyerDynamic microphones. I still have the ones which came with my Mk IV.
And, yes, you could buy an A77 with speakers.
I'm not sure about the "variable speed box" being an option. I've not heard of that. The speed control circuitry of the A77 was designed in a way which made it difficult to add a variable speed control, and there isn't a jack where one could be inserted. However, Swiss electronic music composer Jacques Guyonnet had a speed control custom-designed for his A77s back in 1974 which worked very well. How do I know this? I had the opportunity to learn from him back then for a couple of days, and I'll never forget being scolded for having turned a level control the evening before the next morning's session - I made a no-no. His wonderful wife Genevieve was also quite involved in their music creation. Sadly, she died of breast cancer quite some years ago.

The variable speed option was actually very easy to add. On the Speed Control Card they "replaced" R212/213 with a "divider network" consisting of a 5.1K resistor in series with a 5K linear pot in series with a 6.8k resistor. the center tap of the pot goes to the base of Q206/junction of R215. The 77 I had, had this mod in a little box that plugged into the front of the recorder. Switching contacts in the 1/4" phone jack "neatly reattached" the fixed network when the box was unplugged! Provided -15/+10% speed variation. My notes indicate that this "option" may have (only) been available/made thru the US importer.

  I think your/my definitions of "easy" and "difficult" are a little different! lol
  
  Any time one has to open up the machine, remove a circuit card, remove components and replace them along with a pot, and rewire the internals of the headphone jack contacts, to me, that's not "easy" - that's a pain in the butt. "Easy" is soldering an XLR connector to a mic cable.
  
  Jacques' variable speed control gave him a LOT more than +/- 10% to boot.
