These reels were supplied by BPI, a programming service. They provided music programming to hundreds of small to medium radio stations. What I've learned is that they bought the blank tape from Ampex. I just was courious if any of you have acquired and or listen to tapes like this?

Do they have any kind of Ampex labelling? Do they have a black backcoating? Any speed indication?
Offhand, my guess would be that it's some mid-grade tape, and recorded on a high speed duplicator. But if it has backcoating, it could be pretty decent stuff.
Regarding sticky shed, for 1989 you're probably safe, but watch for signs of it until you're confident that they're ok. Signs include excessive oxide build-up on guides and heads, the tape slowing to a crawl within a few minutes, squealing. If that happens, you might consider junking the tape and sell the empty reels.

They do not have an Ampex label, I got that off a posting on tape head that an Engineer working for BPI had stated that they were buying there tape from Ampex. The speed is 71/2. I still have to test it for sticky shed. You never know. I've got a case of sealed Ampex 457 out of Redwood Ca that I opened one and played and it showed no signs of sticky shed. So you never know.
