Hello,
I am one of those ebay and craiglist shoppers that is always looking for a good deal. I have always wanted a nice bose surround sound but I have never had the money or been able to convince my wife to let me get one.
A few months ago I got a nice Pioneer Elite VSX-27TX, it appears to be very nice and was probably a good model in its day (late nineties). I inhertied some late nineties Maganovox speakers (MX951SSS)and use a cheap RCA subwoofer that was part of a $100 surround sound system.
(Sigh) All that background to get to my question. Should I get newer/ nicer speakers for the Pioneer? Or I am I just fooling myself and should I get a whole new system. I want/ can spend max $300 on new speakers. Should I shop around and get the top of the line speakers from that era or is it better to get a new $300 dollar system?
If I were to go either way what would be your recommendations?
Thanks and sorry this was long winded.
Follow Ups:
I have to admit, I am a bit of a fan and they don't get a lot of press here. But you can get used PSB speakers which are good for both HT and audio.
Okay more help needed..... I forgot to mention that I main functions of my system will be movies and then music.
What do you think about this set? It appears that he would sell the speakers and a sub for $400.

Well I would ditch any speaker with the name BOSE on it! The original 901s were nice in their day but speakers have come so far since then. You would be better to pick up a clean pair of Advents on ebay than anything Bose.
As was said $300 won't get you much of a system but that amount spent on ebay might get you a clean pair of recent vintage speakers and speakers are the one area where one can realize a clearly audible improvement. Amps etc are not going to make much difference unless you spend a lot of $$$$$ imho.
the proof is in the listening
another dumb question from a newbie....
So am I looking for a pair of speakers? Or all 5 for my pioneer Unit?

two good speakers will sound better than 5 crappy ones. You can always add some speakers down the road if need be.
Btw building a sub is not very difficult. You can build quite a good sub for under 500 dollars. I think right now you should check out Audiogon and see what they have for your price class.
you should be able to find some mercury level speakers used around that price level. The m4 floorstanders will do very nicely or the m2 bookshelf/monitor. To be frank, $300 ain't much and putting it into used speakers would be the best thing at this point. Best of luck.
You can get more benefit from acoustical treatment than you can ever get from equipment!

Bruce
Well I did a little internet shopping and didn't see anything from Vanderlaten or Infinity Kappas in my price range yet. I'll keep shopping and see if there is anyway I can get a little more $ to spend.
What is this business of building a subwoofer? It's totally new to me.
See what speakers you can get on Audiogon used...there should be several choices at $300.
Why would I go with new speakers instead of a new system? Need some convincing :)
have to spend the money to get the most sound quality you possibly can. You cannot buy amps, preamps and speakers for 300 worth having.
You are in a world here where preamps and amps can easily cost a thousand or more each. Most of us have been in this hobby for a few decades or more and know well about stereo gear purchases. Please don't think I'm being snobby or anything as all of us started where you are. Once you get your new speakers you could end up addicted like us so be careful, lol.
Believe me for 300 you can get some pretty decent little speakers. Toss the subwoofer and build your own when you have the funds. Most any speaker on Audiogon for 350 or less will be a major improvement. With the Elite receiver and a cd player you'll have a musically enjoyable system.
Check out the Infinity Kappa 5.1's on Audiogon. Also Paradigms. I'd opt for the Infinity speakers. They sound pretty good and have better bass that goes lower than your sub. Mids and highs are also far better than your current speakers. You'll be happy.
i found a decent deal on Infinity Betas- a pair of 40's and a pair of 10's plus a sub for 400.
Is this worth it it or should I still look for a vintage pair?
thanks
