Thinking Vandy's (used 2ce sig or upgradeable 2ce) might be the thing to give me full-range, low fatigue, integrated sound. But they are notoriously set-up and room dependent. I don'tknow how to predict the stnergy. maybe you can help.
15'8%22x18'8%22x8'are the dimensions of the room. The ceiling is treated in a way that makes me think ceiling reflections will be minimal. I can place speakers on either wall. The suspended, second floor is carpeted. A vintage Naim NAP140 will drive the speakers, and Naim pre as well. Vinyl source, for almost all serious listening (a VERY wide range (heavy classical piano and orchestra to bluegrass, Frank Zappa to Joan Baez, but no techno/rap/synth etc.)
Will the Vandy's do well here? Anyone have some experience they'd like to convey?
Any other suggestions in same price range 1K plus a bit or minus up to alot??
Thanks for the help.
Cheers!
hey, i have many speakers inc. 2ce sig's, and a 17'x22' room, plaster walls, hardwood floors. i also have a nait5i (i believe your 140 is 45 w. - which is enough, being %22naim%22 watts), other naim equip. i think the naim/vandy combo can be very nice. right now i have spendors hung on the cables ....
vandy's have deep bass, maybe that's why they have this %22room dependent%22 label. (truly great speakers, esp. for the money, and will play all types of music inc. black flag and slayer.) but if you are able to do minimal treatment and have some placement flexibility (out into the room, most likely), you will probably be ok - nobody can say for certain, of course, until you lug them in there (i assume a home trial is not realistic). the good thing is that the mids and highs are adjustable, which can be a big help in dealing w/ room problems. also, if you have naca5, you'll need to have them set up to %22internally biwire,%22 or %22f-configured%22 in england (speaker term. looks like at %22f%22), to properly drive the vandys. dealer or nana can do it. also, the little stands are mandatory.
as far a suggesting other speakers, there are so many .... i REALLY like the infinity primus line for low dollars, very efficient and would work w/ the nap140 (i have the 152, great sound, go down to below 50). love my spendors (have 1/2's and 7/1's, former is pricey, more of a classical music sound, you'll never see the latter f.s., but the s-series are quite nice), but that's a matter of taste.
good luck, and let us know how it develops.
15 x 21 x 8'4" and you can see my setup in my gallery. They are critical of positioning and I uses the Cardas configuration which can be seen under FAQs here in the Asylum. 2Ces cannot be upgraded - I am not sure about the sigs but you can ask Richard at Vandersteen.com

and I believe I have read a couple of times on the site that 2Ces are not upgradeable.

But since you have good taste in speakers it doesn't count against you....
This upgrade no longer appears on the Upgrades page, so there is some possible ambiguity. At any rate they did offer the option dependent on serial number.
> Answer: HELLO, THERE ARE MANY VERSIONS OF THE 2CE SPEAKERS OVER THE YEARS. ALL 2 SERIES SPEAKERS STILL SAY "MODEL II" ON THE REAR PANEL, YOU ARE CORRECT ABOUT THE LETTERS AFTER THE SERIAL NUMBER IDENTIFYING THEM AS 2CE'S. OVER THE 10 YEARS THEY WERE IN PRODUCTION THERE HAVE BEEN MANY MODIFICATIONS THAT ARE NOT UPGRADEABLE. I SUGGEST YOU FIND A PAIR SN# 77000 AND ABOVE AS THEY ARE FACTORY UPGRADEABLE TO 2CE SIG'S.

Answer: HELLO VU HONG, THE MODEL I AND MODEL 2 WERE NEVER UPGRADEABLE AND THAT IS THE CASE TODAY. THERE WERE 50 PAIR OF 2CE'S THAT WERE MANUFACTURED THAT HAD HALF OF THE 2CE SIG PARTS AND WE REGRETTABLY OFFERED A UPGRADE FOR THEM (77000 AND ABOVE). THIS HAS PROVED TO BE A BIG MISTAKE BECAUSE IT LEFT THE IMPRESSION THAT THE MODEL 2'S WERE UPGRADEABLE..
Cheers
I never said anything about 2s.
Although I had no idea the numbers of upgradable ones was so small....

> But they are notoriously set-up and room dependent.>
Most speakers are somewhat dependent on these things.
Vandys are less room dependent than say, planars.
I'd say the amp you match them with will be more important than the room dimensions, in general.
Room placement is important, however.
Away from the walls seems to be the ticket for most speakers to get good soundstage and imaging.
Once you get an amp that makes them sing, experiment a lot with room placement.
Planars are easier to locate in a room than a pair of vandies, having subs with the vandies makes them easier to place. The planars I own have a huge sweet spot because of the 90 degree radiation pattern, and since they are line sourrces, all listneing is in the nearfield. They fill the room with sound the vandies could never do. The vandies also suffer from lack of vertical dispersion, they sound very different above and below the optimal listening height. All and all the vandies are nice sounding speakers, but they are no planars :-).

Planars are about the easiest to set up and sound good in a room. You don't have to worry about initial floor or cieling or wall reflections - How great is that - all the earliest Comb effect reflections are GONE! OK, you do have to deal with the ultimate sound power balance in the room - by adding some back side diffusion... But that's a piece of cake Compared to the traditional direct radiator problems. Of course, you'also have to deal with a very small sweet spot - but that too is how i listen to music - just me and the artist - one one one.
They'd be great, and easy to hear placement changes of a couple inches, that's a good thing.
Model 2s are not upgradable.
Another speaker in that range or a little higher is the Paradigm 100v2 punchier and will play louder but not as "low fatigue".
Cheers
