Is Cryoparts.com (now his site is under "scheduled mainteanance") a reliable seller?
He used to sell heavily modded vintage turntables, caxrtridges and cartridge needles.
I was silly enough to purchase a NOS AKG P8ES cartridge from him a year ago. Yes, it looked new, but it does not function due to poor suspension. He must have been aware of it before selling the cartridge!
Follow Ups:
That may be a risk with anything that contains organic materials which can deteriorate over time. Speaker foam surrounds, headphone pads crumble or flake, drive belts in turntables and tape decks turn into goo, even cable insulation can turn sticky and corrosive. So, it would come as no surprise if similar materials in phono cartridges also fail or change their characteristics with age.
True...my first exposure to the problem was the original
ADC XLM cartridge. The suspension block didn't hold up, so
they came out with the "XLM improved" model. The dealers had
a free exchange program for the improved.
The AT carts seem to hold up well, good design.
