If you are walking in with a sli of paper wanting them to 'verify'.. without depositing it or cashing it?
I would say MOST banks would not do it for you.. Unless you are a big time bank customer. Say you got $1,300,000 deposited? yeah, I bet they would do it since you are talking to your 'personal' representative.
For some joker they never saw before? I am surprised they did not call the Police, while 'holding' your money order..

Yup, in the US a postal money order is the way to go. There is a toll free number you can call to verify it.
There is no better method because of banking regulations. Years ago they passed regs about availability of funds so after so many days they have to release the funds even if it is not verified. If it turns out ot be bogus later, they take the money from your account and if it causes an overdraw guess who pays.
The banks make more money this way. Go figure, a federal regulation that helps them screw people out of money. and the overdraft fees are ridiculous, for a dollar you can owe hundreds.
