Vernon Vogt, who does business as ArchaicAudio in the AA classifieds and asks from way above retail to stratospheric prices, posted an ad for a broken Pioneer SX-1980, without photos or further description. Here is the email exchange that followed (directly cut and pasted without editing):
Ad: Title: PIONEER SX-1980 BIGGEST BADDEST 270 WPC RECEIVER
Body: LOOKS LIKE NEW-NOT WORKING. IF I GET IT REPAIRED THE PRICE WILL BE $2K. SO YOU DECIDE.
Me: Do you have photos? What are the symptoms? What is the lowest price you will take for the receiver?
ArchiacAudio: $1k firm pickup in 22043
Me: Are you serious? No photos, no description of symptoms? $1k, take it or leave it? Guess which I'm going to do.
ArchaicAudio: LEARN TO READ ENGLISH-PICK UP ONLY
(End of transcription)
Sure, I'd love to do business with a cranky guy who doesn't communicate well and wants too much.
It is an interesting business model, and one followed by most used test equipment dealers: Ask exorbitantly high prices, sell little, but every sale is a home run.
Note that I am not accusing Mr Vogt of being underhanded or dishonest, just as having the qualities noted here and readily apparent from our interchange. I wonder what percent of his listings sell.

Here's something on CL from a bottom feeder that probably paid $100 for it:

Anyone willing to pay more than $300 for a '70's Pioneer ANYTHING, even if NEW IN THE BOX; seal unbroken, deserves what they get!
Lord, such idiocy
The SX-1980 has a very similar look to the rest of the SX-nn80 line. It sounds loads and loads better. It has a great tuner and a pretty darn good power amp, particularly for a 270 watt per channel behemoth.
I too don't think much of Pioneer receivers. Even though it looks identical to the rest of the line except for size and number of needless controls, this guy is different. Listen in a quality system then make up your mind.
I took this thing in because I knew its value and knew I could make money on it, not because it was a good piece of audio gear. I learned that it is indeed a worthy piece of gear.
A grand for a broken receiver , the guys on glue , it's not worth anything .
You are not alone in your perceptions.
"Ask exorbitantly high prices, sell little, but every sale is a home run."Pretty much sums it up. VV along with Al W. on eBay (ID myostuff) just fish for suckers to come along and bite. Their percentage of sales-to-listings must be pretty close to 1 percent. If that high.

Mate I new a guy like that. Never worked a day in his life. Lived off welfare and foster kids that he would enslave. And yes that what happens to most fosterkids. Not looked after buy loving family's. Used as slaves or worse. And he had the same business buy and sell style. To understand it you have to understand physiology. Just as a pedophile can scan a group of kids and know instinctively which kid to abuse so does a abusive seller. I guarantee there will be some masochist out there that is quiet comfortable with dealing with that guy. That will enjoy being ripped off and getting abused all the way. This guy used to sell any thing really. And people would come and look at it and if they offered him less he would abuse them and literally kick them out of his yard. Thing is . They would come back and pay the ridiculous price. Not all the time. You tell some people you cant have something and they have to have it.They will beg for it in the end.
Once ,I inquired about shipping cost for shipping a Fisher SA-1000 abroad.VV's reply-if you can't pay for shipping(he never bothered to get me a quote for shipping) you can't afford it.
He must be the fishiest and most repugnant seller I have ever come across.
