This paper (http://129.3.20.41/eps/exp/papers/0512/0512002.pdf ) - easiest to find on the internet - demonstrates how shill bidding in experimental auctions actually drives the final price down, not up.

For you arm chair economists, take a look at it. It's well written and you don't really have to understand the theory because it's an emprical study in experimental conditions.

This practice of Shill Bidding is well known to Audiogon, however, ignored, as the income from these predatory sellers is too valuable to "The Gon./ 51derrill"
