Thanks to the late Patrick Turner we have Triode data. Because I am enjoying listening to this valve in SET I am curious about it. Using Stephies distortion formula. The low down loadlines are Patrick's . My loadline is up at the dissipation curve 5K6. Im pretty sure I've got 2nd accurately enough at 5.9% I'll grant you 3rd and 4th look odd. That is caused by flattening of the sine wave peaks. So if you want to banish more 2nd go Class A PP and move the thread. I may do so anyway. The mu is good in my book so it may stand Sukuma style EL38 driving EL38 IT or LCL coupled. Probably not much gain prior, if any. Time to give the Mesh plate 27 a try maybe with unbypassed cathode resistor.Strange way I arrived at the EL36, Id bought a pair of EL36 and a friend donated 4 Mazda PL36, I was going to go build the EL36 from ETF 2006. I wasn't there. Only place Ive been was vsac 2003. And our little snug Yorkshire group. Though people come from across UK and Pierre of Tribute came once to deliver my 10k 212 SET output transformers. Anyway when I studied the distortion of the EL36 I wasnt impressed 2nd was fine 4% but 3rd was 4, not my cup of Tea.
I really love the El38.I find the power on my Quad 57's is fine in my top floor room. I was so impressed I immediately bought two more nos, which cost me
Sorry I cant post the curves. I can send them to you if you message me.

I've used the EL38 in triode in a 2 stage SE amp. Mu is around 16 which makes it possible to even use a DHT driver. I ran that for a while with a 26 in front. Good sound. i preferred the rarer fat bottle version to the tall slim one.
But the EL12 or EL12 Spezial is a superior sound with a bit more gain in triode at mu=18. The EL12n is a cheap version available from BTB.
Here are the curves i was using
Thanks for the heads up. The el12 is highly priced to day but the EL36 with a pip anode in according to the Vade Mecum electrically the same and much cheaper. I guess you are going to doubt that?I did distortion check on the EL38 and the EL36. EL 36 curves used were from Vade Mecum labelled EL12 and 2nd at only 2 watts is 6.7 whereas EL 38 at 3.7 watts is 5.9. 3rd and 4th are not significant in either tube.
I cant really stretch to EL12 over £100 each. But I'll try the EL36 and see what I think. Might take some time. At two watts though its not sufficient for me. But curious. Maybe a PPoutput stage for 4 watts if as SE it shines brighter than the EL38. The extra mu of 18 rather than 14 is handy for a sukuma style. At the moment Ive decided to Sukuma the EL38 as the mu of 14 is sufficient.

True, the EL12 has reached silly prices now. Plus you have to import them from Europe usually. Sometimes you see EL12 Spez with the top cap a little cheaper. But the cheap version of the EL12 is the EL12n. Very close in sound to the EL12. BTB has them new in box at euro 19.90 matched pair

Other European electronics retailers like Reichelt also, euro 25 matched pair.
