I built these 13 years ago and have enjoyed them. Trying other speakers, tube rolling, etc.
Today I screwed up and cycled the power on both too quickly on and off and toasted the Schotky rectifier diodes supplying the 300B filaments. Dang. No joy.
A few minutes retrieving the manual, getting part numbers and ordering online to fix the situation. I figure it will take about a week before UPS graces me.
In the meantime I subbed in the Bottlehead Stereomour to take the Paramount's place and keep on truckin'!
Follow Ups:
Cycling the power too quickly usually takes out the Zener string, and probably a transistor in one of the current source boards. I suggest posting on the Bottlehead Forum for more detailed diagnostic assistance, before you get TOO carried away :^) We are always happy to help keep the amps running!
Glad to hear you had a Stereomour handy for backup.
Will do. Looking at the transistor. Only one diode blew on the small string but plan on replacing both just in case.
Thanks
Replaced the small diodes that blew. Kept the ones that didn't and everything checks out. Transistors were fine and the filaments on the 300Bs lit!
So grateful that this was a relatively simple fix. Electronics is fun and has kept me happy and busy over the years but electricity is an invisible force that can kill one if one is not paying attention!
Good news indeed!
Also, good fix and very good to see Paul J at the ready for help to the bottle heads (many years )after the sale
Bottle head is such a great community, way to go
MY Paramours still sound GREAT. Magnequest iron, 45 mod w switch, etc. I always worry about trying to troubleshoot 20 yrs later having gone off the grid, but this gives me re assurance.
