Seems to have been the 5AR4. Google "garber 300b" for more ... :^)

Since I don't know the circuit, component values, the actual components chosen, nor their safety margins, I can't answer either question below.
The 5AR4 will result in more voltage (and power), but could stress elecrolytic caps if they have been used at lower voltages for a long time.
Another question, I've been getting a good bit of hum from them (the hum pots have no effect on it, either increasing or decreasing). Do you think the rectifier type could play a role in this? thanks.
Power supply caps is where I would look first .... electrolytic in no way achieve the reliability of film.

I bought a used pair, but they came with 5R4GY types - but I wondered if they we're the usual rectifiers, as I didn't recall him using them (I followed his work in the past). Do you think it would be safe to try out some 5AR4's? Thanks.
