How good is the Line Magnetic LM-5081A amp?
Follow Ups:
You might check out the Line Magnetic owner's group at Facebook. I'm sure you'll be required to join, but that's pretty simple. I good chance there's a few 508 owners over there.
In addition and if you don't want to deal with Facebook,(who could blame you?) there are several reviews of the 508IA on line. However, by far the most pertinent is a long thread over at the Steve Hoffman forum titled "design flaw for Line Magnetic LM-508IA". This is easily found via Google. You might find this to be a red flag, but certainly more research would be in order.
The flaw is some have a cap fail. Replace with higher temp cap and issue goes away.
Yes, I read most of the comments and got the drift that the fix was a fairly simple one. That said, just wanted to make you aware of this issue. No beef against LM as I've had an 845 based LM 218ia for over 10 years.
Has anyone in the West published a technical review with measurements? That would be the place to start.
Stereohile did a review on the older model using a 6L6 vs new 300B driver tube. They used to call the old 300B to 845 the LM-5091. Now the LM-5081A used the 300B driver tube.
Well, you're really shooting in the dark without a valid technical review. You can't trust people's ears for things like distortion, frequency response or output transformer performance. Audio Science Review.com does good work, but I didn't see this model on his site.
