xfmr coupling and nickel lamms are a big plus. Choice of gain/driver tubes makes a big difference too. the 6A6 has worked well for me, as well as 12b4,76,and 6bx7.

Andy, I believe power output is more of a deciding factor vs quality of sound. Both the 300B and 2A3 sound good, but the 300B 8-10 watts out vs 3 watts is a large difference.

  3 watts vs. 12 watts is a 6db difference.
