You should also consider a TVC (transformer volume control). I found a resistive volume control superior to a SS preamp on my SET, and a TVC far better than the RVC.

I can attest to that with my 01a preamp, used one of Dave Slagle's at the output which lowered output impedance.

  ...or, use one of Slagle's autoformer volume controls all by itself without a preamp...
