I have the original analog RadioShack SPL meter. Where I am sitting right now, this meter shows 58 dB, set to C-weighting, Slow.
The NIOSH SPL meter in my iPhone, with the same settings, shows 79 dB, which is clearly wrong. Before updating to iOS 18, it essentially agreed with the RadioShack meter reading. Another iPhone app also shows these inflated results.
So if you have upgraded to iOS 18, are you noticing the same 20 dB too-high SPLs on your phone?

I have seen other reports of this. See link. I seem to remember someone found the root cause. If I find that link, I'll post it, unless someone beats me to it.
I figured out the cause of the problem: There is an optional setting in iOS 17 (and subsequent updates) called Voice Control that leaves the iPhone mic turned on all the time. You can tell if this feature is on by the orange dot in the "dynamic island." When Voice Control is turned on, NIOSH and other iOS SPL apps give grossly high readings.
