FWIW I have moved on from "computers" to an Ipad as a source. Can always unplug it from the wall and just use batteries. If by "computer" you mean general purpose Win or Mac based PC, I agree entirely. I use tiny Linux based streamers with music specific operating systems. Frequently use a battery source for the RPi3 in the garage. :)
No streaming so no wifi, etc. Just audio.
My collection would not fit on the iPad. It's used solely as controller. Both inter and intranet sources originate with the NAS based media server and connect to the music and video devices via the network.

Closest I got to that type of setup was a mini computer running daphile. My NAS setup is in a bin :(
Fwiw they changed the ipad to accept external storage. I use a 512g microsd card with the iPad. Not sure what the limitation is for that but if it can do sd cards it prob can do big drives too. I could do streaming of course but can use the normal pc for that.
It wont play well on this forum but using a "dongle" dac you can have a completely battery powered front end. In theory at least. I am still using my Schiit Eitr with the USB connection but could test. And FWIW those little dacs often sound better than a big Hifi Dac. At least when upsampling to DSD. Amazed how a $70 dongle is beating in several areas my expensive hifi dacs. The main one makes a big deal about current drive.

That would certainly work for me in terms of audio capacity, but... I enjoy sharing the digital library with nine different audio and video endpoints.
Yeah NAS drives are nice like that. Though its pretty cheap and easy to just make multiple copies of the microsds. Sure its tedious if you constantly buy new music but it sucks so bad these days or the good groups are defunct its really rare I get any new music...-.so its not a big deal and having like 5-6 sd cards pretty much means I will still have music no matter what happens. Heck I could give some to buddies for safe keeping so its really unlikely to ever lose music.

As a retired IT guy, I maintain copies of the pretty static music library on an older pair of USB thumb drives and a newer 400 GB microSD card. Why?
Because I can. ;)
I really do prefer using the Oppo USB reader UI vs WiFi streaming to play music through the HT system.
