Stay current and/or have a solid backup plan.
I don't install malicious apps, BitDefender will flag them anyway, and I keep my iOS and macOS updated which includes security patches. But good to know. Thanks!
Commercial Apps (Roon, Audirvana, Amarra, etc.) and those vetted through the Apple App Store are very secure.
(At least on one computer - two more to go!)
Malware Bytes is useless.
"The folks at Apple/Mac Repair in Berkeley say Malware Bytes is useless."Sure. They'd rather have you pay them to repair your crippled Mac than have you fix it yourself. ;-)
I'm sure it's not perfect but I've used Malware Bytes in the past and it saved my arse! Probably depends on what malware its dealing with. But I also like Bitdefender which is what I run now. I had all sorts of issues with Kaspersky and later learned:
"The US government recently passed a law banning the sale of Kaspersky security software and the subsequent updates for installed software, resulting in the company's exit from the US market.Sep 24, 2024."
Kaspersky is a Russian company. They were always very highly rated and probably worked great on Windows PCs but Kaspersky was a total nightmare on Mac. Bogged the Mac down, made it non-responsive, had to reboot. It had a tight grip on the Mac and took long hours researching how to delete it all so it would completely let go.

I was having problems with my old iMac restarting all the time, so I took it in to Apple/Mac Repair.
They found a few things on the computer that Malware Bytes did not remove.
I bough a used iMac from them with WAY more Ram and Storage.
No Malware Bytes, and no problems.
So far.
Of course, you and others here know a lot more about Computers than I do!
Malware Bytes is like Insurance for a phone.
It's all based on Fear.
iPhone Ins is $ 20/Month!
A waste of money for me at least.
Should be $2/Month...!
There are third-party insurers (often through cellular carriers) who charge more for iPhone insurance than Apple. There's AppleCare+ and AppleCare+ with Theft & Loss ranging from $3.99/mo to $13.49/mo depending on which iPhone and which plan.
As of September 2024 :
AppleCare is the basic warranty that comes with Apple products. It lasts one year and covers hardware defects. AppleCare+ is an extra plan you can buy. It gives longer coverage and more benefits.
AppleCare+ protects against accidents like drops or spills. It also extends tech support to two or three years. The cost varies based on the device.

I had a problem trying to switch from AT&T to Verizon, to save money.
I had to go an AT&T Store to get it straightened out, and back on AT&T,
it was a real snafu.
While there I told the guy I need to save money, he offered to reduce my Internet cost by $ 20/Month.
Instead he signed me up for $20/Month iPhone Ins, and didn't change the Internet price.
I went back, he said he couldn't reduce the Internet and pushed the Insurance very hard.
I cancelled it, it was $20/Month.
It's not worth it at $9.99 either, IMO!
I don't think that would happen to you, you know too much.
I, on the other hand...
It IS a royal pain dealing with the cellular carriers. We've all been there spending hours trying to figure out their plans and special offers. I try to do it online but when I have to call and speak with someone I can't even understand it gets really frustrating. I recently switched from T-Mobile back to Xfinity Mobile (Verizon network). It was a challenge.I cancelled T-Mobile 3 or 4 months ago yet they still send me an invoice every month showing a -$12.50 CREDIT. So why don't they just credit it back to my VISA? I called them a couple months ago and they said I should visit a store to get it cleared up. That's total BS. They're just hanging on to my money as long as they can thinking I won't do anything about it. I'm sure they do that to everyone and profit from their little scam. Yeah, it's only a $12.50 CREDIT but it's not their money.

Nevertheless, I was glad to be alerted to check to see if my OS was current - which it is now. ;-)
